Major Barry Smith was born and raised in Owensboro, Kentucky. He graduated from Apollo High School and obtained an Associate’s Degree from the Owensboro Community College. He’s a graduate of the University of The Cumberlands, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Business Administration.
Major Smith started his career with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 as a patrol deputy. He has spent his entire career in our Patrol Division and has served in all supervisory positions. In 2010 he was promoted to Lieutenant of Patrol and in 2016 to Captain of Patrol. In August 2017, he was promoted to his present rank and serves as Chief Deputy.
Major Smith has completed numerous training courses through the Department of Criminal Justice training. He is a 2015 Leadership of Owensboro graduate. He also is a 2016 graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Homeland Security Leadership Academy.
Major Smith currently serves on the Daviess County Election Board, the Daviess County ASAP Board, the Medical Control Authority Board, 911 Advisory Committee, and served for six years on the Lighthouse Recovery Board.
