In an effort to ensure that the perpetrators of some of Daviess County’s most heinous and unsolved crimes do not escape justice, the DCSO has developed this portion of our website to keeping these cases as active as possible. By sharing this information with the public, it is our hope to receive information and develop new leads so that we can ultimately solve these crimes and bring justice and closure to the victim’s and families. – Sheriff Brad Youngman 


SISTER CARMELITA MATTINGLY

HIT AND RUN / HOMICIDE

DECEMBER 23, 1964

KNOTTSVILLE (DAVIESS COUNTY), KENTUCKY


Sister Carmelita Mattingly, age 66, was struck and killed on December 23, 1964 as she was walking across the road on KY Hwy 144, from the Catholic Nun’s home to Saint Williams Catholic School. A portion of Sister Carmelita’s habit was found 8 miles away in Thruston (Daviess County), Kentucky.


TERRI Marie HOWELL

HOMICIDE

July 25, 1980

KNOTTSVILLE (DAVIESS COUNTY), KENTUCKY

DCSO CASE# 80-1598


Terri Marie Howell, 24 years of age, was last seen alive on July 25, 1980, approximately 1:00 AM in the morning leaving the Hasty Tasty Bar. Howell, a female friend and an unknown male had gotten into a pale or light blue 1960's model 2 door Ford passenger car with round lights.  Witnesses describe the man as: white male, brown hair, approximately 5 ft. 10 inches tall with a slender build.  Howell's female friend that was in the vehicle with them advised they were going the opposite direction of their homes, the girls became scared and she decided to jump from the moving car. Howell remained in the vehicle. The female friend that jumped stated she was almost struck by a car that was behind them. At approximately 4:45 PM on July 25, 1980, Howell's body was found in an abandoned farmhouse by Free Silver Rd and Lanham Road outside of Knottsville, KY. Howell had been strangled and burned inside the abandoned farmhouse. The autopsy concluded Howell was already dead before the fire was set.

JANUARY 7, 1990 (Date body was found)

PHILPOT (DAVIESS COUNTY), KENTUCKY

An unknown white male was found in the mid-morning hours of January 7, 1990 on Pleasant Valley Road near South Hampton Road. Hunters discovered the unidentified male while approximately 40 feet into the wood line off Pleasant Valley Road. The unknown male had been shot numerous times, both hands had been cut off, both feet had been cut off, multiple skull fractures, and numerous teeth were missing. The unknown male had shoulder length dark brown hair, brown eyes, approximately between 5’02” to 5’06”, approximately 130 pounds, no scars or tattoos, and a slight suntan on the lower two-thirds of his arms.

MAY 11, 2016 (Date body was found)

MACEO (DAVIESS COUNTY), KENTUCKY

INDIANA STATE POLICE CASE # 16ISPC004970 (Jasper Post)


On May 11, 2016, at approximately 4:09 PM, DCSO was alerted to a male body floating in the Ohio River by a passerby that was delivering goods to barges. The body was of a male subject that was partially clothed, shot in the head and possibly strangled as well. The male was approximately 5’07” tall and decomposing due to being in the water. Unable to post a picture of the unidentified male victim due to the graphic nature of the decomposition of the body. A 30-year-old female by the name of Sarah Lindsey Ipock was also found in the Ohio River on the same day near the Perry County, Indiana shore. DCSO and the Indiana State Police believe these two cases are related. A 3rd body of a female was located in the Ohio River on May 12, 2016, but is not related to these two bodies and was determined a suicide. DCSO and the Indiana State Police are jointly working on these cases. Detective Matt Busick of the ISP Jasper Post is lead investigator for the Ipock case. (812) 246-5424.
